DENNIS CHUA
DENNIS CHUA talks to Country Club’s funny trio on what they have planned for St Patrick’s Day. FOR the first time, comedy takes centrestage at Guinness’ St Patrick’s Day celebration on March 19.
Featuring Comedy Club’s Douglas Lim, Kuah Jenhan and Kavin Jayaram, the revelry will take place at Central Park Avenue outside One Utama Shopping Centre in Bandar Utama, Petaling Jaya.
The trio will be joined by popular emcee Andrew Netto, who will also add his own brand of humour to the evening.
Lim says, “There’ll be three 20-minute sessions in the show. Kavin and Jenhan will be in the first, while I’m joining Kavin in the second and Jenhan in the third.” It will be their first collaboration as a comedic trio.
“I’ve been appearing with Douglas in his MACC (Malaysian Association of Chinese Comedians) shows since last year, and I’m with Kavin in the 12-member comedy group Young Comedians Of Malaysia (YCOM),” Kuah says.
Kavin says: “Jenhan and I perform with YCOM in Comedy Thursday at Zouk, Kuala Lumpur. The stand-up skits take place every first Thursday of the month.” “Our coming show will be a mix of old and new ‘issues’. We’re busy rehearsing individually, but we’re making sure none of our jokes overlap,” Lim says. Kavin says that while each of them has their own style, their humour focuses on Malaysian life, with emphasis on individual experiences. He describes his comedy as “putting the ‘fat” back in “fatuous” and the “fun” back in “dysfunctional”.
He first performed at The Actors Studio in the 2006 comedy session Free Flow.
As for Kuah, he first shot to fame in Free Flow. Three years later, he performed alongside Britain’s comedy icon Paul Chowdhry and Australia’s leading comic Garry Who to rave reviews.
He also joined Lim and Phoon Chi Ho in MACC which performed in PJ Live Arts, Petaling Jaya to sold out audiences.
This was followed by appearances with comedic veterans Monti and Logi in The Actors Studio as well as being guest emcee in various events.

Kuah also performed at Australia’s biggest comedy club The Comic’s Lounge, as the venue’s first Malaysian act.
He has also appeared in musicals such as Rose, Rose I Love You in 2007 and Ismail — The Last Days in 2008.
Multi-talented Lim is also a singer, songwriter, composer and scriptwriter. He took part in Asia Bagus in the early 1990s and later created several songs for the soundtrack of his first major television series Kopitiam. He also wrote the script for Kopitiam’s later episodes.
Lim later penned and composed songs for television series such as Each Other, Table For Two, Ghost and Realiti, performing most of them.
Most recently, he wrote and composed music for Cuci The Musical which has received multiple nominations in the coming Boh Cameronian Arts Awards 2009.
His work in Kopitiam won him Best Actor in a Comedy at the Asian TV Awards 1998 and Best Original Score in the Malaysian Video Awards that year.
The Comedy Club is Malaysia’s first and only international stand-up comedy show. It began in June last year and is held at Zouk and PJ Live Arts on every third week of the month.
International comedians who have performed include the United States’ Terry Johnson, Australia’s Jon Atherton and Akmal Saleh, Britain’s Jeff Green and Gordon Southern and New Zealand’s Brendhan Lovegrove.
Comedy club’s founder Rizal Kamal believes that the event will boost its brand name further. It is their first celebration of St Patrick’s Day, which celebrates Irish culture as well as the arts.
“This year, fans can expect a more boisterous St Patrick’s Day festival which will combine laughter, food, music and fun. St Patrick’s Day is all about enjoying life and is celebrated around the world,” says Guinness Anchor Berhad marketing director Mark Jenner.
