![]() If you like stand-up comedy, stand up and be counted at The Comedy Club Kuala Lumpur. In Singapore, the stand-up comedy night featuring a bill of international comedians have been a huge hit, and judging from the special preview show held a few weeks ago, KL will soon join in that success. Organized by Laugh Out Loud Events with help from Vivify, the event will take place over two nights at Velvet Underground, Zouk KL. The special preview show featured routines by host Jonathan Atherton (Aust), Andrew Netto (Malaysia) and The Real T.J. (USA).
I found Jonathan Atherton's routine the funniest of all three. Having spent a lot of time in Asia, his fluency in languages and amusing impersonations of Asian stereotypes went down well with the crowd. Plus he also related a lot about life in Australia which proved to be hilarious and accurately observed.
Andrew Netto's routine was very Malaysian .... I doubt anyone who wasn't from here would've understood what was going on. He recycled some tired Samy Vellu jokes, but ended well with a poke at VK Lingam.
The Real T.J. was brash and bold - and people lapped it up. There was a fair amount of penis jokes (you could've guessed from the picture above!) but also some pokes at Singaporeans (he's lived there for a number of years) that obviously, the crowd appreciated.
Check out these candids:
In July, their comedy nights will fall on the 23rd and 24th. On the line-up is host Jonathan Atherton making another trip here, fellow Australian comic Greg Fleet and Hung Le (Vietnamese-Australian). There's also a local act which is yet to be confirmed.
I found some clips of both Greg and Hung Le on YouTube. Greg is popular for being one of Australia's best comics but he's also known for his rather turbulent personal life. One of his best shows was 10 Years In A Long-Sleeved Shirt, a half-hour monologue where he talks about his drug abuse. This is Part 1.
Here's a showreel I found of Hung Le.
Also, one last one of host Jonathan Atherton talking about eating hor fun in Geylang. Ahem.
